Long Island race car driver Justin Brown chatted about his latest ventures in the sport.

Brown is a 21-year-old NASCAR Tour Type Modified Driver. He hails from Manorville and acknowledged that his faith is a driving force in both his personal and athletic life.

Daily motivations as a race car driver

On his daily motivations, Brown said, “There are two things that motivate me. The first one is always my Lord and savior Jesus Christ, just doing everything for his glory gives me great comfort and reason for why I do what I do, to preach his name.”

“Also, the second thing is the feeling of winning, just knowing your hard work paid off, you’re always chasing that feeling,” he said.

Proudest moments in the sport

Regarding his proudest moments in race car driving, Brown remarked, “Honestly, the last few seasons winning Tour Type Modified races have been really cool for me, just knowing that I used to watch them a lot growing up, and to race against drivers that I used to be fans of and compete at a high level.”

Future plans and goals

On his goals for 2024, Brown revealed, “Some resolutions and goals that I have for this year are to read my Bible more and grow my relationship with Christ, and also work harder in the shop and at the gym to be the absolute best I can be.”

Speaking of his future plans, he shared, “I don’t really have any set-in stone plans for my future at the moment, all I can do is work as hard as possible and try to win races and the future will work itself out on its own, so I’m really just focused on the present.”

Career-defining moments

On his career-defining moments, he noted that it was the adverse moments that molded him and helped make him stronger. “Some moments that helped shape and define me are I think the bad moments like defeat, sometimes you have to hate losing more than you love winning,” he said.

“I think the feeling of defeat is something that can make you work harder and ultimately become better,” he explained.

Favorite mottos to live by

Brown shared one of his personal favorite mottos to live by, which has become his slogan in life.

“One that I live by is ‘if you don’t play to win don’t play at all.’ For me, it doesn’t matter if it’s a board game, video game or anything competitive, I’m playing to win and I feel like that helps me mold a winning mindset in whatever I do,” he explained.

Superpower of choice

If he were to have a superpower, Brown noted that it would probably be “super strength” just because it would “be really convenient to be able to lift anything” and it would allow him to “go crazy at the gym.”

Advice for hopefuls that wish to go into race car driving

For hopefuls that wish to go into race car driving, he said, “My advice for someone getting into racing would be that you need to work hard and be eager to learn.”

“There is always something you can learn to become better or more knowledgeable in a certain aspect. Sometimes, success might not come right away but if you learn something every time you’re on track and try new things, over time the progress will show,” he elaborated.

Success

On his definition of the word success, Brown said, “To me, the word success means winning. Realistically, people only remember who wins, not the guy that finishes second or third. So, you have to do whatever it takes to win.”
