In today’s interconnected digital world, where personal data is constantly being exchanged and online threats loom large, having a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is no longer just a tool for tech-savvy individuals or businesses. Even domestic users should be using a VPN such as NordVPN and Surfshark, as they are vital for protecting your online activity, even within the confines of your home. Here is a quick rundown of why everyone should consider using a VPN, regardless of where they access the internet.

1. Keeping Your Data Safe

Even if you do all the right things, and have malware and virus software running, even if you run all the security updates as soon as they become available, your home devices are still vulnerable to cyberattacks, especially if you ever use public Wi-Fi or connect to unsecured websites (they are the ones without the little padlock in the address bar). A VPN

encrypts the information between your computer, tablet, phone, and the outside world. This means your data, like passwords, financial information, and browsing history, is safe from hackers, malicious viruses, and worms designed to create havoc.

2. Stay Anonymous

ISPs (Internet Service Providers) can track your online activities, allowing them to collect and sell data to advertisers or other third parties. Yes, they are allowed to do that. With a VPN, you become invisible and can’t be seen. Your IP address is masked, giving you a fake route, making it virtually impossible for anyone to trace anything you do online back to you.

3. Access Restricted Content

Some online content, such as streaming services, gaming or gambling websites, or other social platforms, can often be restricted based on your geographical location. A VPN scrambles your location and allows you to bounce off servers worldwide. The restricted content cannot see where you are, so it basically gives you a pass. This can be used for dubious purposes, but we are thinking more about people travelling and wanting to access local services or watch tele from their home country.

4. IoT Devices

You might be tempted to gloss over this one, as it doesn’t apply, right? What even is the Internet of Things? Well, anything that connects to the internet from your home. Do you have an Alexa, a smart speaker, a home thermostat heating system? They are IoT devices and are just as susceptible to being hacked. Using a VPN helps protects you from the risks.

5. Streaming Speeds

While you might think you have paid for a good internet speed, your service provider can slow you down. In a move known as throttling, they restrict the download speed for things like streaming television or gaming because it helps them manage their networks. It makes them look good when it comes to attracting new customers. If you have a VPN, this also confuses them, and therefore they have no choice but to leave you on the optimal speed as they don’t know what you’re doing on the internet.

A VPN is not just for professionals. Every home should consider using a VPN to keep themselves safe when using the internet.
