WASHINGTON (voa) – President Bush has begun his second year in office with a near record high approval rating.
On Sunday, the president celebrated his first anniversary in office at the Camp David presidential retreat near Washington working on the State of the Union address, which he will deliver before Congress on January 29th.
A White House spokesman said the president sees his first year as one of “results and progress,” and a year of challenge in the defense of freedom after the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Mr. Bush won the presidency after perhaps the most controversial and hard-fought elections in U.S. history. The president is riding a wave of support boosted by his handling of the U.S.-led campaign against terrorism.
According to one recent opinion poll, his handling of the anti-terrorism campaign has earned him an 82 percent approval rating. At the same time, Mr. Bush is facing criticism from some for his handling of the U.S. economy, which has been in recession since last March.
