The husband can be seen standing over his wife’s bed and singing the song “You’ll Never Know,” by Rosemary Clooney. It’s a song that they sang to one another throughout their 73-year marriage. As he sings to her, he gently strokes her face.
Erin Solari, the couple’s granddaughter, was the one who filmed the act of love.
Solari, from New Orleans, filmed her grandfather Howard Serena, 92, singing to his wife Laura, 93, because she said this was probably going to be the last time and they wanted to capture the moment. She added that it was really loving.
The granddaughter said right after the video she broke down and started to cry. Solari said she was happy she got to capture the moment for her family, and she wasn’t surprised that it touched other people too.
Howard sang the song to Laura when he went away to fight in World War 2, and he sang it to her to comfort her.
The couple used to sing the song together at family events, and they would each take a verse and serenade the other.
Solari noted in the video’s description that there was a sign above her grandmother’s bed and it said “patient blind,” and that’s because she has macular degeneration. She can’t see much of anything but light and shadows. However, that didn’t stop Laura from staring into Howard’s eyes.
