Global music star Zayn Malik has penned an open letter to Rishi Sunak, the new British Prime Minister, to plead for free school meals for all children from families on Universal Credit.
He is using his platform as a pop star and social influencer to help make a difference in these children’s lives.
It is estimated that 800,000 children in England are living in poverty and do not qualify at the moment.
In a personal letter penned to Mr. Rishi Sunak, the multi-platinum-selling pop artist demonstrated his passionate commitment to tackling Britain’s grave problem of food poverty, pleading with the Government to commit in their budget on November 17, in an effort to give all children living in poverty a Free School Meal.
Zayn is one of Great Britain’s most successful musicians. He grew up in inner-city Bradford, West Yorkshire, and was one of the many children who relied on free school lunches.
He knows first-hand the stigma surrounding food insecurity and the direct impact it had on his own physical and mental health.
As a child who depended on free school meals and now a father himself, Malik is committed to using his platform to call on the government to support our most vulnerable children.
“No child should have to suffer the trauma and stigma of hunger and poverty. We want every child to grow up healthy to lead productive lives. I am calling on @10DowningStreet to expand #FreeSchoolMeals to every child in poverty in England,” Malik posted on Instagram.
