Carter Rubin (“The Voice” winner Season 19) chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about his debut single “horoscope,” and being an artist in the digital age.

On the idea for the song, he said, “‘horoscope’ was actually an idea that was presented to me. I sat down with my team of co-writers and producers and they introduced the concept. ‘horoscope’ was a title and a verse on one of their phones, and we built upon the idea. I fell in love with the vibe and I immediately related to the story. Being a part of the creative process was an incredible experience.”

Regarding his music and songwriting inspirations, he said, “Different emotions I have and things that happen in my life definitely inspire my music and songwriting. I always strive for authenticity when I write. To me, songwriting is like telling my story. If I’m not feeling it, it won’t work.”

Rubin opened up about winning Season 19 of “The Voice.” “Winning Season 19 of ‘The Voice’ was such an unbelievable confidence boost for me. From the very beginning, I was blown away by the incredible amount of support from everyone watching. I made so many lifelong friends with the other artists and felt honored to be sharing the stage with such talent,” he said.

“I also had the privilege of being coached by the incredible Gwen Stefani. None of this would’ve been possible without her. Becoming the youngest male to win the show, as well as Gwen’s first win, made me feel so lucky and proud. Being on the Voice was an experience I will never forget and will always be grateful for,” he said.

The digital age

On being an artist in the digital age, he said, “Honestly, being a new artist in the digital age can be pretty stressful. Sometimes I find myself putting too much value in numbers (streams, likes, and followers); however, it’s also really cool because I have the chance to connect with awesome supporters of mine.”

For young and aspiring artists, he said, “My main advice for young and aspiring artists is to keep going and keep chasing that dream. It can’t just come to you, you have to go after what you want and work hard for it. Don’t be afraid. You miss 100% of the chances you never take.”

He listed Ariana Grande and Olivia Rodrigo as his dream female duet choices in music. “A dream duet of mine would definitely have to be Ariana Grande. I’m in love with her voice and the way she arranges her music, I’ve been a superfan for so many years, and getting the chance to sing with her would quite literally make all of my dreams come true. Another dream duet I have is with Olivia Rodrigo. She’s absolutely killing it right now, I love her voice and her songwriting,” he said.

Regarding his definition of success, he shared, “To me, success doesn’t refer to the amount of money or followers you have. If you’ve found peace and happiness in what you do and where you are in life, you are successful.”

Rubin concluded about “horoscope,” “I wanted to make ‘horoscope’ as relatable as possible, I think this song is perfect for anyone who’s experienced heartbreak (or is currently going through it). I hope it makes you feel something.”
