Actress, singer, and pianist Alicia Witt released her new EP “Witness” on August 25.
The EP opens with the soaring piano-laden ballad and title track “Witness,” where the female narrator sings about always being there for a special person, and being able to form a strong bond and connection through friendship.
It certainly has a stirring retro vibe to it, similar in the fashion of Alanis Morissette’s “Uninvited.”
It is followed by “Clever Mind,” which has a Sunny Sweeney “From a Table Away” vibe to it, because it is similarly told from the viewpoint of a paramour, who is committing adultery with a married man.
Witt picks up the pace with the upbeat and infectious “Loop,” and it is followed by the sultry and bluesy “Always Tuesday,” where the listener can recall the ’90s musical work of Sarah McLachlan.
The EP closes on a positive note with “One Last Drink,” which is positive and expressive, as well as on a fitting note with the atmospheric piano-driven ballad “Someone to Write Me a Song.”
The Verdict
Overall, Alicia Witt delivers on her latest musical effort “Witness.” Each track has its own identity, and it is a breath of fresh air (especially compared to the vast majority of the lackluster songs that are on radio airwaves these days).
Her “Witness” EP is a record that deserves to be on vinyl, especially since from a storytelling standpoint, it would feel like a story within a story; moreover, every tune on this collection should be heard in its own right.
The only downside is that there aren’t more songs on there, but hopefully, she will release a full-length studio album in the near future.
“Witness” stands out sonically, lyrically, and vocally. It garners two thumbs up, and at every listen, there is always something different to pick up.
