On that note, it is off in North America, but by no means a failure. But sure, some could say disappointed when describing it when using that comparison. However, the movie is huge and continues to tear up the box office. In the second weekend out, it took in another $77 million domestically. That was below projections, which had it around $85 million.
The film is keeping pace with the original by its blistering numbers overseas. But, domestically, it is off from the original. For example, “Avengers” was out around $373 million after two weekend, domestically. The total so far for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is at $312 million, domestically. Overseas, it is at $563 million right now for a worldwide total of $863 million.
It is just odd that not reaching the heights of the first “Avengers” in North America is part of the story, but it is and will be. They are a franchise and a series, so that makes sense. It is not being compared to other movies like “Titanic” or “Avatar” on that level. That would be unfair, but to compare it to a film in the franchise is playing out. And, overseas, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is king. In North America, it is a solid film but not off the charts as many thought it would be going in.
Now, when it goes over $1 billion and where it ends up will be the time to throw out “Avatar” and “Titanic” in to the discussion. With thanks to the overseas box office, it may end up third all-time, worldwide.
Weekend, domestically
1. “Avengers: Age of Ultron” – $77.3 million
2. “Hot Pursuit” – $13.3 million
3. “The Age of Adaline” – $5.6 million
4. “Furious 7” – $5.2 million
5. “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” – $5.1 million
But, it was “Hot Pursuit” that was the new wide release and it was far off in second with $13.3 million. That gap is odd to see but the film failed to click at all. In no way was it going to pursue “Avengers: Age of Ultron” at all. The film, starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara, could have grabbed more considering it is Mother’s Day weekend. It was not the case, it seemed.
“The D Train” failed to board, too. It stars Jack Black and was in 1,009 theaters so its showing of $469,000 hurts. Meanwhile, “Maggie,” a zombie film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was in only 79 theaters and took in $131,000.
