Review: Kris Allen and American Idol finalists play The Space at Westbury (Includes first-hand account)

Allen performed a medley of his past hits that he sang during his tenure on the reality singing competition American Idol, which included an angelic version of “Falling Slowly” from the motion picture Once, and it was followed by a smooth rendition of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.” His cover of Kanye West’s “Heartless” was the song that stole his show, and garnered the biggest reaction from his fans. Allen accompanied himself on acoustic guitar, and the control he maintained over his voice was quite impressive.

An added bonus of the night was hearing Allen sing his latest single, the love song “When All The Stars Have Died.”

This year’s Idol winner Maddie Poppe and Caleb Lee Hutchinson were remarkable as well. Besides, who could not fall in love with Poppe’s infectious and liberating single “Going Going Gone.”

Both singers paid homage to Carole King and James Taylor with a stunning version of “You’ve Got a Friend,” as they played acoustic guitars. Hutchinson displayed his rich, baritone voice, which complimented Poppe’s crisp, crystalline vocals.

Equally noteworthy performers were the remaining top finalists Gabby Barrett, Cade Foehner, Catie Turner, Jurnee, and Michael Woodard. They all proved to be talented vocalists in their own right.

“Going Going Gone” is available on iTunes.
