Acclaimed actor and stand-up comedian Chris Kattan (“Saturday Night Live” alum) chatted about his new movie “Angel City,” as well as his engagement, and his forthcoming comedy shows in Buffalo New York.

‘Angel City’ film

He shared that he is filming the movie “Angel City,” which was written and directed by Noel Braham. “Angel City is great, it’s a refreshing change of pace to do a drama,” he said. “It is nice to play a character that’s real. It’s different than how you play [characters] in a comedy.”

“I play the role of Ace, and it’s a great story. It’s a really well-written script and I am glad to be a part of the project. I started it on Monday of this week, and will continue. I am shooting it next week as well,” he added.

Stand-up comedy shows

Kattan still tours around the country doing his standup comedy shows. This Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, he will be performing at the Helium Comedy Club in Buffalo, New York. “I will be telling stories, and hopefully, I will make people laugh, that is what is to be expected, and usually, it works,” he said.

“I am looking forward to coming to Buffalo, it’s a cool place. The Helium Comedy Club is a great chain, and I will be there from April 27 to 29. I hope the fans come and that they just enjoy themselves. I really love Buffalo and I think it’s going to be a fun time,” he elaborated.

“I think it’s a time to laugh, there are a lot of things going on in the world and sometimes, we need a break to just laugh. This weekend will be a good time, and I think it will be a good relief for everyone,” he added.

‘Hey Kattan!’ sketch comedy show

He also spoke about the success of his “Hey Kattan!” sketch comedy show on YouTube. “That sketch show on YouTube was so much fun, and I think we are going to do some more starting up in May,” he hinted.

“I really liked the way they were cut and edited, that’s good teamwork,” he said with a sweet laugh.

Personal life

In his personal life, he shared that he is engaged to his fiancée Maria. “It has been exciting. Maria is incredible and a wonderful woman,” he said. “This is a big step in my life and I am very excited to share the rest of my life with her.”

Proposal at a Wilco concert

“I proposed to her at a Wilco concert,” he recalled. “Jeff Tweedy is their lead singer, and we are both big fans of Wilco.”

He noted that he proposed during their set when Tweedy performed the Wilco song “I’m the Man Who Loves You.” “It’s a great song,” he said. “Their manager and Jeff made it very easy for me, and they went out of their way to make this happen. Fortunately, Maria said ‘yes’ and we embraced.”

“We stood there, listened to the song, and then we went backstage, I think we were both in shock how beautifully it was orchestrated. It was an extremely surreal moment and a romantic one for us. It couldn’t have been better thought out. I have a great deal of gratitude towards the band Wilco for making this possible,” he added.

“This is a very exciting time for us, and we actually have an engagement party tonight,” he exclaimed.

‘The Answer to My Prayer’ film

Speaking of Maria, Kattan noted that he has a new film that is coming out titled “The Answer to My Prayer,” which Maria has a role in. The movie is directed by Patrick Perez Vidauri with a screenplay by Nancy De Los Santos-Reza.

“Also, it turns out that Maria and I are a good writing team. Maria used to be a journalist and a writer as well. We have written a screenplay together and an idea for a TV series, and everyone that we’ve shown it to seems to be enjoying it. We have become a good writing team, which is great to create together in addition to being a couple, and that’s a beautiful thing,” he said.

On the title of the current stage of his life, Kattan said with a laugh, “Finally, I love this new chapter in my life.”

Inspirations for his comedic routine

Regarding his inspirations for his stand-up comedy routine, he remarked, “Real life. Living in the Midwest is interesting, and living with Maria’s three children from her previous marriage.”

“I am learning to be a stepdad and that is going great,” he admitted. “I love being around kids, and a lot of my comedic material is coming from that. Now, we are in Springfield, Illinois, most of the time and it’s just a different world.”

“I’m adjusting in Illinois, and that alone is a sitcom,” he jokingly laughed.

Success

On his definition of the word success, Kattan concluded, “Being happy and healthy, and making people laugh. Also, being able to give back.”
