Country star Canaan Smith chatted about his new single “Diamond on the Dresser,” which is his collaboration with Emily Weisband.

‘Diamond on the Dresser’

“I wrote it with James McNair, and he wrote the title, and I thought it was a fantastic idea, and we fashioned the song around that,” Smith said. “It hit close to home for me because I have a few family members that struggle with alcoholism.”

“It’s a sobering picture of the culmination of addiction, and how it can sometimes end, and losing everything you have, and I wanted to go there, and James was not afraid to go there too,” he explained.

“Besides ‘Bronco,’ I think this is my favorite song that I have in my catalog, and it just means so much to me. I am really proud of how we went there with the lyric and we didn’t shy away from telling it like it is,” he said.

“This song is a huge wakeup call, and the subject matter is not pretty, especially how it ends sometimes, and I wanted to shed some light on that,” Smith added.

Emily Weisband

Smith praised his duet partner Emily Weisband for being a “fantastic” songwriter and singer. “When Emily first heard the song, she got chills listening to it, and I decided to do it as a duet, and she was the right girl to sing it with me,” Smith acknowledged.

“Emily was ecstatic to do this duet, and she absolutely crushed it,” he exclaimed.

2023 CMA Fest

On June 8, Smith will be performing at the Chevy Vibes Stages at CMA Fest. “I am stoked for CMA Fest,” he said. “This year is the 50th anniversary of the CMA Fest, so it will be really cool to be a part of that.”

Tyler Hubbard

He has great words about his friend, global music star Tyler Hubbard (Florida Georgia Line fame). “I love Tyler, he is the man,” Smith said. “His solo music is excellent, and it is taking off, which is so cool to see. I am happy for him.”

On the title of the current chapter of his life, Smith said with a sweet laugh, “Treading Water.”

Closing thoughts on the single ‘Diamond on the Dresser’

“I hope this song conjures up some real feelings,” he said. “Country music is designed to make you feel something. This song, in particular, if you give it an honest listen does that. It has a powerful message to it, and I hope people feel the tension, the heartache, and that fragile undoing that the songs tells the story of.”

“I hope listeners don’t think of it in a typical commercial radio sense, and more of a storytelling classic country sense, and appreciate it for that,” Smith concluded
