Video shows how many dustmites live in a typical mattress

The video was produced by the Ohio State University Acarology Lab. In the video, you can see thousands upon thousands of dust mites squirming over each other

The dustmites can be seen surrounded by their own feces, and each dustmite produces around 20 droppings per day.

When the camera starts to zoom in, hundreds of the brown mites are revealed, and many of them have legs.

Dust mites survive off human skin scales and they thrive in humid environments. Carpets, pillows, blankets and mattresses are a few things that can become reservoirs of human skin cells.

According to Huffington Post, a hygiene expert said humans can shed half an ounce of skin per week and a lot of that will be in their beds.

The expert said dust mites are not harmful. However, their feces can cause coughing, rhinitis, eczema, dry eyes and hay fever.

To reduce the impact dust mites have, people can wash all their bedding that is not encased in barrier covers on a weekly basis. Washing them at 60° C or above should kill off the dust mites.
