The new models could be unveiled this Tuesday, according to T3 who cite French news site iGen. There is good evidence that the iPod is getting an update because images of the devices in new colours make an appearance in the source resource files of the latest iTunes version, 12.2.
Additionally, a June 14 date would allow the unveiling to coincide with Apple Pay’s UK launch. Another tell-tale sign is that the iTunes images show the calendar icon on the Touch as displaying “Tuesday 14”. With everything put together, it looks likely that iPod will be getting a much needed update in the next few days.
The details of what Apple has done to its once best-selling product line are currently largely unknown. It is thought that the Touch will gain support for Apple Music though, something conspicuously lacking from the current iteration given Apple’s focus on music playback.
The Touch will also get the most noticeable hardware changes, including a 64-bit processor which should improve performance. The camera is rumoured to be getting an upgrade and the iPhone’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor may also make its way to iPod for the first time.
MacRumours write that people hoping for significant changes to the Nano or Shuffle may be disappointed. It looks likely that the new colours may be the only notable sign of a refresh here. The images embedded into iTunes reveal that the new devices will be available in black, gold, grey, blue, red and pink.
The changes mark the first alterations to the iPod line-up for some time. The last major launches of the Touch and Nano were made back in 2012 while the Shuffle dates from 2010. The updates will enable people to use some of the key features of the iPhone at a significantly lower price.
