The company first hit the headlines in 2013 with its original smartwatch that could run without a connected smartphone, something unusual in the market. It achieved only limited success though so Neptune have decided to do something rather more ambitious with the Neptune Suite.
Whereas companies like Apple and Samsung are focusing on putting smartphone apps onto watches and using the phone’s connectivity to power the watch, Neptune are doing the reverse of that. A phone, tablet, wireless keyboard and other pieces of hardware are available to buy that are all powered by the Neptune Hub smartwatch.
This is a quad-core, modern-looking curved band. The front face is a sleek screen that illuminates only when needed. The watch has support for 3G and LTE, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and LTE which is crucially self-powered with no need for a smartphone.
The Pocket Screen is billed as an “interface” to the hub, offering a smartphone experience with rear and front cameras and a 5-inch screen. Neptune say “it’s not very smart, it doesn’t need to be” because all of its work is performed by the Neptune Hub watch.
The Tab Screen offers a tablet experience with a 10 inch screen and front camera. Neptune Keys is a wireless keyboard that can be used as a laptop when paired with the Tab Screen. The other hardware includes an HDMI dongle to convert any monitor into a large screen for the hub and a pair of magnetic-tipped wireless earbuds that snap together into a pendant when not in use to prevent tangling.
The accessories are very cost effective as they do not contain any major computing or connectivity components beyond the screens. With one small, portable device designed to be always in use powering everything, Neptune has created a versatile connected group of products that could find favour with people who often move between places with different devices.
The company says that the wearer of the Neptune Hub watch will be able to transition seamlessly from any Neptune product to another without any hassle. Apps open on one device will immediately be available on all other devices in the same place.
Neptune Suite has raised $819,000 of a $100,000 goal on Indiegogo. The Suite will cost $599USD to buy and includes all six products. People who purchased the Neptune Duo smartwatch previously will now receive the entire Neptune Suite for their originally pledged price
