With such a tool, someone with a compatible device can connect to a trusted network using their Microsoft account details, and pay for short-term LTE access as needed.
While the company has not yet made an announcement about plans for this service, the Cellular Data app is already being promoted on the company’s website.
According to the website, the app will require a Microsoft SIM card to allow specific Windows 10 devices to “get you connected at any time with a secure, high-speed mobile connection.
“Connect with – and pay for – a mobile data plan on your Windows 10 device using only your Microsoft account information. That means no fixed contract and no long term commitments to a mobile network operator. Now you can buy and use mobile data at your own convenience.”
Microsoft has not indicated which markets the SIM cards will be available, or the pricing of the cellular data.
According to Engadget, Microsoft may be partnering with a company called Transatel, the leading European MVNE (Mobile Virtual Network Enabler), to develop the SIM card for this service. The company announced that Microsoft has recently retained their ‘901 SIM card,’ to support this new service.
