Audi Q7: The SUV Slayer

Digital Journal — Even before it was even launched, the Audi Q7 was being heralded as the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne killer. Based loosely on the Pikes Peak concept vehicle unveiled at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show, the Q7 is Audi’s first SUV.

With an attractively powerful look, the Q7 applies a distinct Audi design to the typical sporty SUV. Simply put, the Q7 is huge: It measures 6.5 feet in width and weighs in at a whopping 5,467 lbs. Combined with high ground clearance, wide suspension movement and a traction and stability system, the Q7 is an off-road powerhouse with the refined look of a high-end street vehicle.

Audi engineers were careful to ensure the Q7 will appeal to any SUV driver. The wheelbase has been lengthened to fit a comfortable third row, and air suspension allows you to configure numerous settings for different feels: a Comfort setting provides a pillowy ride, a Dynamic setting provides a more rigid feel, and an Automatic setting will make the Q7 feel softer or firmer as needed.

The Audi Q7 will likely be the most-watched SUV in 2006, as this new contender is hoping to redefine the perception of a luxury SUV. “It’s the coupe of SUVs,” says Audi’s chairman of the board of management, Dr. Martin Winterkorn.

BMW, Porsche and other luxury SUV manufacturers should definitely buckle their seat belts, because they are going to have a bumpy ride in ’06.
