Air Force Stars taking to skies over Rose Bowl

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. (Courtesy of AFSOC News Service) – The U.S. Air Force Stars are taking to the skies and heading for centerfield of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 3.

The parachute team will present the American flag, the team flags of the Miami Hurricanes and Nebraska Cornhuskers, and the game ball after free falling from 5,000 feet above the Rose Bowl from an Army HH-60 helicopter.

The jumpers will fall at about 120 mph before opening their red, white and blue parachutes and piloting them into the Bowl Championship Series National Championship game.

The jumpers aim their parachutes toward the stadium -– the logo at the center of the field marks the landing area and proclaims the territorial touchdown for the Air Force Special Tactics Air Commandos.

Each team member is a free-fall parachutist and military jumpmaster with at least 500 jumps to their credit. The team headquarters is at the 720th Special Tactics Group, here.

The Stars mission is to bring a greater understanding and awareness of the Air Force, Air Force Special Operations Command and special tactics to the American public.
