Despite the success, this squad still needs help to become a force again in the league and two of their biggest needs are a top-notch defender and more scoring from the wing, both of which could be added this summer as the team has nearly $23 million to work with under the salary cap.
Kristen Odland of the Calgary Herald has made several suggestions in a recent article on moves the front office could make when free agency begins July 1, including what soon-to-be free agents would help with depth and possibly help this franchise earn a home ice series next season.
Rumors have already surfaced on Anaheim winger Matt Beleskey, with several other NHL clubs having interest in the 26-year-old, but with the amount of money the Flames could offer, the Canadian born Beleskey could return north of the border.
The former fourth round selection has been impressive this season, scoring 32 points in 65 games, including eight game-winners, but his play during the playoffs has made him a name on the top of any team looking for help over the summer. With two game winning goals and six points overall, he could become the player that Calgary needs to improve on this past year’s success.
Finding a legitimate defender is also a must and Bleacher Report writer Lyle Richardson has reported that Paul Martin of Pittsburgh would be a great addition. The 34-year-old still plays hockey at a high level, but more importantly for the Flames, this veteran would add some experience and leadership on and off the ice, something any good young team needs to grow.
With an early pick in the first round of this years draft and plenty of money under the cap, this franchise is primed to make another move upwards and with the right additions over the summer, this team could be a dark horse to win a title over the next couple of seasons.
