Veteran point guard Kyle Lowery wore down carrying this team on his back all season and it showed in their 4-game sweep to Washington, but with a couple of tweaks, including adding another scoring threat in the back court and the Raptors could move into a top-2 team in the Eastern Conference next season.
Adam Fromal of Bleacher Report has indicated that Wesley Mathews of Portland would be a welcome addition to the squad and for good reason. The 28-year-old is not only a solid scoring threat, ranking third on the Trail Blazers in points per game, but the veteran guard is also among the best defensive shooting guards in the NBA.
Mathews is coming off an Achilles injury and could fly low under the radar of teams this summer, but his experience, leadership, and playoff experience would upgrade the roster and add some much-needed depth at the guard position.
Christopher Walder has reported that the front office and coaching staff are looking to make a change after another disappointing year from Terrance Ross. After shooting just 41% from the field and failing to build off a good 2014-15 season, the time is now to find a replacement.
Another option for the Toronto Raptors is Orlando guard Tobias Harris, but his value is much higher than Mathews and the team would need to spend millions more to lure him north of the border. Depending on the game plan put in place by ownership, either of these players would upgrade the shooting guard position, but adding Mathews would allow the front office to possibly add another second-tier free agent and after a season of injuries, adding depth should be a priority for this franchise.
