HomePage: Keeping Pace with Digital Culture

TORONTO, Digital Journal — With 20 years of service, David Onley is a veteran of Toronto’s CityTV and CablePulse24 (CP24) networks. Onley was the first Canadian newscaster to receive U.S. National Weather Association certification. He has an even longer pedigree of science, space, technology and education reporting at various TV and radio stations.

HomePage launched in February 2000, after news director Stephen Hurlbut came up with the idea of combining news, interviews and viewer phone calls in a weekly show about digital culture and the high-tech universe.

“We offer the novice and the computer buff hands-on demos of new devices, software and Web sites,” Onley says. “The strength, however, is our guests. We really have some fascinating people. They’re very smart, very creative and have a story to tell.”

In January, Digital Journal’s editor-in-chief, Chris Hogg, appeared on HomePage to show off the latest in digital gadgetry. “It’s always nice to be around people like David Onley,” says Hogg. “David is one of Canada’s most prominent technology experts, so it really is a great experience to work with someone you can learn a lot from.”

HomePage is recognized as a must-watch show for anyone trying to keep pace with digital culture. Tech issues are brought to the table, dissected, then the viewing audience is invited to call in. Like other CityTV staples, it’s a reflective, democratic approach to the news with a Canadian spin. You can’t help but learn and be entertained at the same time.

“If Canada plays it correctly,” Onley says, “we can develop one of the most highly educated cultures on earth. As long as wisdom is pursued as well, the quality of life personally, spiritually and technologically should skyrocket, and HomePage will bring it to you!”

In Canada, you can watch HomePage every Wednesday on CP24 from 5-6 pm (EST), or on Canadian Learning Television at 3 pm (EST) every Thursday.
