Academy Award winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) stars in the new mystery thriller “Sleeping Dogs,” which was directed by Adam Cooper.
It was released in theaters on March 22, 2024 via The Avenue.
Aside from Crowe, the cast consists of Karen Gillan, Marton Csokas, Thomas M. Wright, Harry Greenwood, and Tommy Flanagan.
Adam Cooper co-wrote the screenplay with Bill Collage. It is based on the book “The Book of Mirrors” by Romanian author E.O. Chirovici.
The synopsis is: Roy Freeman (played by Russell Crowe) is a former homicide detective with memory loss, who is forced to solve a brutal murder that he has no recollection of.
As evidence uncovers secrets tied to his forgotten past, he is led to a chilling truth where sometimes, it is best to let “sleeping dogs” lie.
It is filled with multiple twists and turns that will keep the audience engaged for most of its duration. At the same time, it contains motifs and symbolism, especially if one pays close attention. So much of its morals and values can be applied to real life.
The Verdict
Overall, “Sleeping Dogs” is a crime action film that will certainly spark questions and discussions among viewers. Russell Crowe delivers a commanding performance that runs the gamut as he layers the emotions of his complex character Roy quite well.
Crowe proves once again why he is one of the most gifted and versatile character actors of our generation.
Adam Cooper deserves to be commended for his vision in bringing this unflinching story to life. There is a rawness and sincerity to this film.
Marton Csokas and Karen Gillan also shine in this movie in their own unique ways. Tommy Flanagan also stands out as Jimmy Reis. It garners four out of five stars.
