Review: Comedian Jo Koy entertaining at The Paramount (Includes first-hand account)

Koy began his show by making a joke about the name of the town of Huntington, and further noted that it is a bad time to get injured tonight, especially since all of the Filipino nurses are here tonight, and not working in the emergency room. “I’m trying to get a feel of this place,” he said.

He shared that Atlantic City in New Jersey is a beautiful place to go to, if one cannot afford to go to Vegas. He revealed that it took him 4.5 hours to get to the Borgata. “Is it racist that I’m Asian making fun of Asians?” he asked, jokingly. “I don’t know why I squint to impersonate an Asian.”

Koy noted that he is half white, half Filipino, which means that “his dad was in the military.” “That’s not a joke. That’s real,” he said.

He shared that his father had told him that he married his mother cause he loves Chinese food, yet for Koy, “rice is rice.”

Growing up, Koy said that Filipino moms would not let their kids chase their dreams, so their children would become mail carriers and nurses, as opposed to DJs. “You are not allowed to have dreams when your mom is Filipino,” he added.

When he told his family that he would like to become a comedian, their immediate response would be: “Who told you that you were funny?”

He promised that he had never met any of the Filipinos in the audience tonight, yet if they were to show him a picture of their mom, he bet that she would look exactly like his mom.

He added that his parents divorced when he was 11, in the 80’s, at a time when his father would leave to start a new family. Fast forward to many years later, when Koy would have his own son, he asked him what he would like to me when he grows up, and his son responded, “an architect.” Koy would inquire if his son had another dream
instead, since he knows that he can’t draw.

In addition, he didn’t want to buy his son a hoverboard since he got a C- in Math in school, yet he eventually bought it for him, and now Koy spends more time on it than his son does. “Don’t buy hoverboards. They are dangerous,” he told The Paramount audience.

Koy also discussed his sleep apnea problem, which he described as something worse than snoring. It feels as if there is a “ghost choking him at night.”

If any of the audience members ever get lost in Hawaii, he recommends that they do not ask for directions there, since one will get lost even more, especially since all of the places there would include the vowel A; moreover, that is the reason that they do not have “Wheel of Fortune” in Hawaii, since that would be the winning letter to solve the puzzle, and the solver would be in debt as a result.

He closed his set by noting that 13-year-old boys are the “nastiest creatures on the planet” and ended with a graphic explanation of his son’s birth.

The Verdict

Overall, Jo Koy’s comedy show at The Paramount was a great deal of fun, especially when he poked fun at himself and his own family. He is worth seeing live whenever he is in the area. It garnered 4.5 out of 5 stars.
