Review: Phillip Phillips delights at Stage 17 for 95.5 PLJ (Includes first-hand account)

This event was hosted by 95.5 PLJ air personality Ralphie Aversa. “Welcome to Stage 17,” he said. “How is everybody doing?” Ralphie asked. He went on to introduce Phillips as the winner of the 11th season of American Idol, and noted that he has sold over six million singles in the United States alone, and shared that he is on tour with the Goo Goo Dolls.

As Phillip Phillips took the stage, he was accompanied by the ever-talented Dave Eggar on cello. “Everybody, doing good?” Phillips asked. “Awesome. It’s so good to be here,” he added, and kicked off his acoustic set with his brand new radio single, “Miles,” where he displayed his crisp and haunting vocals.

“Thank you,” Phillips said, prior to noting that he’s always nervous playing new songs. The following song was one that everybody knew, his infectious single “Gone, Gone, Gone,” where he showcased great control in his voice, and the performance was soothing.

After a sip of water, Phillips performed yet another new tune, the bluesy and funky “Don’t Tell Me,” which had a retro vibe to it. He continued with a question and answer session with Ralphie, where he praised the new Stage 17 for being “awesome,” with “cool lights.” In this short interview, he revealed that he had recorded “Miles” last year, and he was extremely pleased with the way that it turned out. Phillips also expressed his love for his record label, Interscope Records, as well as for being “awesome.”

“It was fantastic seeing Phillip Phillips at Stage 17. I love both of his new songs, especially ‘Miles.’ Phillip is very funny. I loved the new Stage 17 as well,” remarked Claudine Webb, New York City schoolteacher and fan of the American Idol Season 11 winner.

The Verdict

Overall, Stage 17 was the ideal venue to see Phillip Phillips, since it allowed the audience member to experience Phillips’ rich, baritone vocals in an acoustic setting. His voice was as smooth as silk, and Dave Eggar was incredible on cello. Well done.

Phillips’ new single “Miles” is available on iTunes.
