The single “I Want U” is a track featured on his latest studio effort, Genesis, which celebrates the 25-year anniversary of his debut studio album. “For those folks that follow me on Instagram, I’ve been in love, and the song is about my fiancee, Leilani. It’s exactly what the title says,” he said. “If you love Brian McKnight, and you are wondering what he is doing, pick up the Genesis album. It is truly one of the best records I’ve ever made,” he added.
Brian McKnight’s latest studio offering Genesis is available on iTunes. “I actually had the title first before I wrote the song. That was the first time it ever happened, since I really wanted a rebirth, and a re-imagining of Brian McKnight for 2017,” he said.
He described the song “Forever” on his new album as the “quintessential Brian McKnight 2.0.”
Over the last 25 years, McKnight revealed that he sees a lot of “growth.” “Personal and professional growth. Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing,” he admitted.
On the digital transformation of the music industry, he said, “None of us were ahead of the streaming curve. The music business is having to catch up what streaming is and how to monetize it, and how to weather that storm. The companies that don’t create anything but the platform are making the lion’s share of the profit. Who would have thought that when Napster happened, this would be what the future would become.”
Regarding his use of technology, McKnight shared that he does his “Brianized” series on his social networks. “I do this on various platforms, where I go back and reinvent a lot of the music from my past, and some of the music from today. The response has been overwhelming,” he said.
McKnight described the “Rock the Elephant” benefit last year, where he was joined by Jeff Timmons from 98 Degrees, as an eye-opening experience. “It encourages us to be more in tune with everything that is going on in the world,” he said.
