Country singer-songwriter Drake Milligan (and “America’s Got Talent” Top 3 finalist) chatted about his new album “Dallas/Fort Worth,” his experience on AGT, and his upcoming Grand Ole Opry debut.
‘America’s Got Talent’
He was a Top 3 finalist on the latest season of “America’s Got Talent.” “It has been a wild ride so far,” he admitted. “That felt great. I feel like a winner.”
New album
On the song selection process for “Dallas/Forth Worth,” he said, “I moved to Nashville five years ago and I started writing songs as soon as I got here. I sought the veteran singer-songwriters in town. Over the last five years, I wrote a ton of songs.”
“This record is a culmination of the hundreds of songs that I had written over the years. I wanted to show every side of my writing: the big rocking songs, the slow songs, the drinking songs, and the sad songs. I wanted to showcase everything and we needed a double record to do that,” he elaborated.
Regarding his songwriting inspirations, he said, “I get inspired by all sorts of things such as a conversation with a friend.”
At the moment, he listed “Save It for a Sunny Day” as his personal favorite song on the album.
On his plans for the future, he said, “I want to get out there, play as many shows as possible and see everybody. We are playing Stagecoach next year, that is pretty exciting. During my shows, I play songs that didn’t many the record, so hopefully, I can look into a new record really soon.”
Regarding the title of the current chapter of his life, he said, “The Beginning. Chapter 1.” “I am hoping for a long book ahead,” he said.
Grand Ole Opry debut
On October 5th, he is looking forward to making his debut on the hallowed Grand Ole Opry stage. “I am such a big fan of country music history and there is a no bigger place than the Opry for a country music history fan,” he said.
“I get to stand in the same circle where Hank Williams and Elvis Presley stood and every other great. It is going to be really special,” he added.
Milligan listed Lee Ann Womack as his dream female duet choice in country music. “Lee Ann has the best voice of any country singer ever, she is just amazing,” Milligan exclaimed. “I am a big Shania fan too. I love Patty Loveless too.”
The digital age
On being an actor in the digital age, Milligan said, “People consume music so differently now. If you release a small body of work, people consume it so rapidly. Now, we have our phones, and we have all the music we can possibly want on the tips of our fingers. People listen to music now more than ever, and it is important to me to put out a body of work.”
If he were to have any superpower, it would be “flight.” “That way, I could just fly to the next gig,” he said.
When asked what he would go on “The Masked Singer” as, he noted that he would go on as a “sloth” or a “raccoon.”
He defined success as “getting to continue to perform and putting out music.” “Impacting people’s lives,” he said.
“Dallas/Fort Worth” is available on digital service providers by clicking here. It earned a favorable review from Digital Journal. “I am so excited about having a debut record as a double album. There is a little piece of me in all of these songs that showcase a different side of me. Country music is right open right now,” he said.
