The company, based in Los Gatos, California, said the policies will allow employees to return to work on a part-time or full-time basis. They will also be able to return to the company and then go back on leave. Throughout the first year of the child’s birth, or adoption, workers will be paid their normal wage.
Netflix’s new policy will only apply to full-time, salaried employees in all countries they operate in. A spokeswoman for Netflix said the company employs around 2,000 people.
Reed Hastings, Netflix’s CEO, said that the announcement is in line with its unlimited vacation policy. Hastings continued to say that until 2004, they only had a standard model of N days per year, and then they eventually moved to focus on what people get done, not on how many days worked.
Tawni Cranz, Chief Talent Officer at Netflix, said Netflix’s success depends on retaining talented employees, and people tend to perform better at work when they are not worried about their home life.
Among 185 nations and territories, the United States and Papua New Guinea are the only places that didn’t impose government-mandated laws that required companies to pay mothers while on leave with their babies. This was according to a study last year, which was released by the United Nations’ International labor Organization.
The Family and Medical Act of 1993 does require companies of a certain size to provide eligible new parents 12 weeks of unpaid leave.
