Interview: Prince Royce talks new album and ‘Back It Up’ single (Includes interview)

His “Back It Up” single is a collaboration with such international sensations as Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull, and he filmed a vibrant music video for the tune. “For me, this video was all about making it big, colorful and fun. I was just grateful to be able to have Jennifer and Pitbull in there, and to have a support like a Latin movement. I definitely had a lot of fun doing the video. It turned out exactly how I wanted it to be,” he said.

Prince Royce noted that his album is highly eclectic and the song selection process for it was very difficult. “I recorded 100 songs for the album, literally, with R&B, pop and Latin flavors. I was choosing the ones that felt right. I love the ballads on there that I recorded, and I kind of went that rout,e and I narrowed them down,” he said.

He listed the song “Lucky One” as his personal favorite on the album, due to its ballad nature and for being a “slow jam.”

For Prince Royce, a difference exists when he sings in the studio vs. performing in a live setting. “Live is much more different since you have so much going on. You have the people and fans screaming and it’s a different type of energy. In the studio, it’s more you and the mic and a lot of thinking and being precise with things,” he said.

Each day, he is motivated by his family and looking back on his humble beginnings. “I grew up in a tough neighborhood in the Bronx, and I grew up with not much. My parents were immigrants from the Dominican Republic, and they came with that American dream, and when I think back, that was my motivation to continue and to be a positive role model to the kids that grew up just like me,” he said.

Over the last few years, Prince Royce acknowledged that he has grown and matured substantially as an artist and performer. “For me, it is all about learning. Every time I collaborate with somebody and every time I open up a new project, it’s a learning experience,” he said.

He listed global music star Rihanna as his dream female collaboration choice. “Rihanna can do pop, R&B, heartfelt and rough songs. She is so versatile and she can do everything,” he said.

Prince Royce is touring with pop songstress Ariana Grande and he is really pleased with how it has been going so far. “It has been really good, and I have been really happy with the results,” he said. “Right now, I am promoting this record and we are going to jump on the third single soon. I am going to be performing at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas this weekend, which I think is going to be huge, since so many people are watching it.”

For his fans, Prince Royce said, “I love them with all my heart, and I appreciate their support. This album represents Latinos like me that grew up in the United States, but are still very much connected to the Latin background and Latin music. I hope to continue to represent Latinos around the world and I hope this can open more doors, and we can hopefully see more Latin artists crossing over to the English market.”

His advice for aspiring musicians is all about perseverance, hard work and really believing in themselves. “That’s what I was told myself growing up, and that’s what it is all about,” he said.

Prince Royce defined the word success as “Being able to connect with people.” “It is not about money or sales sometimes, it is about connecting with people, I see that as success,” he said.
