Mayweather, who is set to do his fifth fight for CBS/Showtime on May 2 against Manny Pacquiao, also said that he no longer enjoys boxing like he did in his prime and he wants to retire this year. But he did not name his next opponent for his last fight which he has set for Sept. 12.
“I don’t enjoy it like I once did. My last fight is in September.” he said.
No one knows for sure who Mayweather fights next, as there is a very limited choice in the 147-pound limit who has the same crowd-drawing power as Pacquiao to make his farewell fight worthwhile.
A loss against Pacquiao would likely result in a rematch which could take place in the same venue on Sept. 12. Like Mayweather, Pacquiao has been fighting twice a year and his second fight happens in November or December of each year.
For another lucrative fight, Pacquiao would be happy to accommodate Mayweather in a rematch on the date that he has already set.
Terms and conditions for the fight could remain the same if Mayweather wins on May 2 but it will be Pacquiao who will dictate the terms if he wins.
Because of Mayweather’s crowd-drawing power, it is possible Pacquiao will agree to a 50-50 purse split but the other terms will have to be in Pacquiao’s favor being the champion.
A Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch could generate more gate revenues if it can be held at the newly-constructed 20,000 seat MGM-AEG outdoor arena which could be rushed to open late in the year although it is programmed to open early next year.
Mayweather is valued client of MGM and the possibility of getting the new venue done on time to accommodate Mayweather’s farewell fight is not remote.
