Op-Ed: Why Amir Khan will dominate Chris Agieri

Khan (30-3-0, 19 KOs) has won four straight fights since losing to Danny Garcia in 2012 and is fresh off a unanimous decision win over Devon Alexander last year.

Algieri (20-1-0, 8 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to eight-division world titlist Manny Pacquiao last November in Macau, China.

Khan and Algieri are known for their speed and power. Boxing fans anticipate that they will mix it up from beginning to end of the 12-round encounter.

Before his announcement to fight Algieri, the British boxing idol came under heavy pressure to face fellow British fighter Kell Brook, who is unbeaten in 34 pro fights and is the current IBF welterweight champion.

Khan is aiming to land a lucrative fight against Floyd Mayweather, who is scouting for next opponent for his Sept. 12 scheduled fight.

But Khan had voiced his apprehension on the Sept.12 schedule saying it could be in conflict with his religious observance of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.

As in his recent title fights, Algieri is used to take the role of an underdog as he did against Ruslan Provodnikov and Manny Pacquiao. For the Khan fight he is once more playing the role of the underdog.

Khan has more ring exposure with rated fighters than Algieri. He is likewise more experienced as an amateur fighter having won a silver medal in the Olympics. As a professional. Khan has 30 fights to his credit against Algieri’s 20 pro fights.

The Sweet Science

Algieri’s problem is how to catch Khan inside the ring knowing that the Briton moves faster than him. Apparently Algieri will try to wear out Khan and catch him late in the closing rounds.

“I have great endurance and great defense. You make the guy miss, and you push the action. Khan’s a sprinter, and I’m an endurance guy,” Algieri said.

If Algieri can wear out Khan as he intends to in the later rounds, he could probably score a win on points but Khan, who is three years younger than Algieri, has gone the distance with a good number of opponents since he turned pro in 2005.
