Op-Ed: Donaire may have scared Quigg in a nearly done fight deal

The Ring’s Michael Woods said on Friday that the Donaire-Quigg clash may no longer happen after he previously reported that the fight was being finalized for the third week of November this year.

“It looks like there’s no fight,” said Rachel Donaire of a Nonito v. Scott Quigg junior featherweight tangle.“These guys, they say they want a big fight. Then it comes time to sign and they balk,” she said. Rachel is the wife and manager of Donaire Jr.

Donaire is puzzled why no deal has been finalized despite having agreed on the purse the Quigg camp wanted as well as the venue of the fight, Quigg’s hometown of Manchester, England. He also told Boxing Scene/New Standard that he told his promoter Bob Arum not to worry too much about the purse so long as he gets the fight done.

Nonito Donaire Sr., the father trainer of “The Filipino Flash,” is confident that his son will put an end to Quigg’s 31-fight winning streak.

“I’m not worried about this guy Quigg. He may be heavy-handed but he is not really strong, he’s easy to hit and he’s slow compared to Nonito,” adding that Quigg “has no one-punch knockout power, unlike Nonito.”

Although Quigg has managed to stay unbeaten in 31 fights spanning eight years since he turned pro in 2007, he hasn’t been tested against elite boxers like Donaire, who has faced some of the best fighters in his division.

Knowing that Donaire has agreed on the contentious issues of the talks which include the fight purse and the venue, there seems to be no reason why Quigg would want to pull out from the ongoing talks.

The only valid reason could be his fear of losing his title and being beaten for the first time in his career by Donaire based on the assessment of Donaire’s father and trainer.

Quigg is unbeaten in 31 pro fights and is the current WBA super bantamweight champion. The 26-year old Manchester, England native is coming off a TKO victory over Kiko Martinez at the Manchester Arena, Manchester, Greater Manchester, England last July.

Donaire is recovering from his devastating loss to Nicholas Walters of Jamaica last year via TKO in the sixth round at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, where he lost his WBA Super featherweight title. He has since won two straight fights against William Prado of Brazil and Anthony Settoul of France via TKO.
