Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch possible in May next year

Maywaether defeated Pacqauiao by unanimous decision in May last year in a historic fight that generated 4.5 million pay-per-view (PPV) buys valued at over $500 million including gate sales. It was the richest fight in boxing history.

While both Mayweather and Pacquiao were gratified about the financial windfall, the fans were not and they were angry because they saw a fight that wasn’t worth $100, which is the sum they paid to see the PPV event.

Pacquiao claimed after the fight that he got injured before and during the fight which is the reason why he failed to give the fans his usual exciting and entertaining fight while Mayweather maintained a safe distance and failed to engage Pacquiao in a toe-to-toe situation which was what the fans wanted to see.

After the fight, Mayweather praised Pacquiao for being a smart fighter saying he is extremely dangerous.

“[Pacquiao] definitely had his moments in the fight. As long as I moved on the outside, I was able to stay away from those. He’s a really smart fighter … My dad wanted me to do more, but I had to take my time. Because Manny Pacquiao is a competitor, and he’s extremely dangerous,” Mayweather said.

For his part, Pacquiao said he thought he won the fight based on his camp’s scorecard.

“I thought I won the fight. He’s moving around. It’s not easy to throw punches when he’s moving around so much … I thought I caught him many more times than he caught me,” Pacquiao said.

More than a year after their first encounter, Roach has confirmed that Mayweather and Pacquiao have started to talk about a possible rematch next year.

“Mayweather came to the fight, and I heard they met later on in his (Pacquiao’s) room,” Roach confirmed in an exclusive interview with The STAR.

“Hopefully, they worked it out that we can fight one more time. Now, if we’re going to fight, it looks like Manny has a break in session in April and May. So that means in the month of April I’m heading to the Philippines until he’s out of session. So we’ll have a fight in May if everything works out correctly,” Roach added.

Mayweather has yet to react on Roach’s disclosure while Pacquiao has been vocal about the possibility of a rematch even before his victory over Jessie Vargas last Nov. 5 to reclaim his WBO welterweight title.
