Sirsy, the little band with big sound Special

Posted Apr 30, 2012 by Erin P. Capuano
Get to know the two person band Sirsy and their unbelievable talent. These two nerds never save the best for last because their entire show is a roller coaster ride from start to finish.
I wish I could say calling Sirsy a little band with a big sound covered it but I'd be lying, not about the little part of course, there are only two members and yes their sound is big but on a scale that's hard to describe on paper. My theory has always been that when trying to relay a band's sound the best advice I was ever given was to just go see them live so that's just what I did.
It was a few years ago I was introduced to Sirsy when they were a four piece band and every one of my friends in New Jersey was singing their praises. They begged and pleaded with me to go see them and review their show so that I could see what all the fuss was about, and I've been a friend and admirer ever since. This dynamic duo is fronted by soulful songstress Melanie Krahmer, her voice has been described as a lion's roar and a floaty whisper, a girl "with the lungs of a teenage athlete and the growl of a sixty something blues singer."
--The Boston Globe (Boston, MA).
"Krahmer can sing, scream, blow flute, drum, & tease, and she does them all REALLY well. Libutti plays everything else (he even uses his feet!) ... GO SEE SIRSY!"
--The Village Voice (NYC).
"Radio friendly, and eye-friendly, but the material is actually REALLY good. Like pop songs used to be before MTV".
--Indie Sounds NY (NYC).
If you can imagine this Melanie is also the band's drummer she plays her drum kit while standing up of course, plays bass parts on a keyboard with her drum stick and just for shits and giggles she adds a flute solo in from time to time. To say Melanie is a one man band would be almost accurate if it wasn't for the talented Mr. Rich Libutti who basically plays everything else, guitar, piano, bass on a keyboard at his feet, and backs up Melanie on snare when she's flexing her flute muscles. This group is the epitome of what a musician truly is, multi-talented, creative, and works with what they have and can make something out of nothing.
Sirsy is in constant tour mode and never misses a beat, they drive from show to show in their trusty van wowing fans each chance they get. Hailing out of Albany, NY they are virtual celebrities with fans that will follow them to shows outside the New York area just to get their fix. They rack up an impressive 250 shows a year and have toured with the likes of Maroon 5, Lifehouse, Collective Soul, Third Eye Blind, Train, Blues Traveler, Cheap Trick, Vertical Horizon, Fuel, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Boys like Girls, and many more. Sirsy's music is nothing short of brilliant, they have captured what it means to make a catchy hook while still keeping true to the trade with honest and emotional lyrics.
The band started to establish a New Jersey fan base in part to Melanie's smoking hot looks and luscious soulful voice, and the fact that she's a diehard flirt sure helps her case, oh and did I mention she's a vegetarian? Melanie was born in a small town called Pattersonville, NY where the cows are plentiful but the people, ah, not so much. She lists some of her favorite artists as The Beatles, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Eva Cassidy, Aimee Mann, Nikka Costa, Bill Withers, and Lenny Kravitz. Melanie and I have a great deal in common after learning one of her fav movies is Clue, I after all, am the eternal quotable Clue fan, and am up for a game any time you are Mel! Now this isn't the only reason we should be cosmically locked, she also loves Nikka Costa live and I too think Ms. Costa is not only HOT, sexy and sultry but her voice takes me back to what it means to be funky, what it meant when George Clinton and his P Funk rocked out. I too also remember the Muppet Show fondly and wish for the days when Carol Burnett sang Fever with Animal on national television. While Melanie does not want to pick her favorite child she does say that Still is her all time favorite Sirsy song and not too far behind is Leftover Girl, Some Kind of Winter and Sorry Me. "Playing music is the only time I feel completely free. I am really grateful that I get to do it so often. So, even a bad show for me is still better than the alternative (not playing music). I'm often blown away by the positive energy that comes from the audience and so touched when I see people singing along to our songs and sincerely "feeling" the music in the crowd…that's the best." Rich to his credit isn't a bad looker himself and when he plays the guitar you know he belongs with some of the greats, it doesn't take long to realize whether you want to or not, you are going to fall in love with his boyish charms. Rich was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island where he grew up adoring the fine art that is Star Wars, a hip nerd to the core he is what I like to call a nerd you can get down with. He lists some of his favorite artists as The Beatles, Nikka Costa, The Police, David Bowie, Fiona Apple and The Philosopher Kings. He doesn't disappoint when it comes to movies either with the likes of Star Wars, The Princess Bride, "have fun stormin the castle," and the Shawshank Redemption. I may have to disagree with him when it comes to superheroes though I think Aqua Man is kind of boring. But Rich does say Still is the best song that he and Melanie ever wrote together and I think I agree. "I love when we can play loud, raucous songs like "Revolution" and quieter, down tempo songs like "Again" in the same show. It's cool when you can get the audience to respond to both." [url=]
Sirsy's latest endeavor is the Revolution Re-Mixed CD, their debut release on Funzalo Records. Re-Mixed was produced by legendary producer Paul Kolderie, (Radiohead, Hole, Martin Sexton, Pixies, Dresden Dolls). Released in July 2010 it features re-mixed and re-mastered versions of their popular songs Revolution, Still, Oh Billy, and Sorry Me. It's just the right amount of classic Sirsy as you've always known them, with a bit of a twist on their original formats, in other words they're even better. You can catch Sirsy at a city near you and I suggest you do, you will not be disappointed, these two nerds are one in a million.
