Pet food ingredients, rice protein concentrate, is the second found in the US to be contaminated with melamine. Earlier testing proved that wheat gluten had also been contaminated.
Royal Canin USA & S.Africa recalled some of its dry dog and cat foods made with the tainted rice protein concentrate. Also the French company's South African unit recalled a range of dog and cat dry pet foods after they were found to contaminated with a third ingredient, corn gluten. These products containing melamine are sold in S.Africa and Namibia. Wilbur-Ellis Company, a US importer of tainted rice protein, has recalled the entire ingredient it had distributed to five US pet food manufacturers. Earlier this week Natural Balance Blue Buffalo recalled cat and dog foods made with the contaminated rice protein concentrate.
"I keep reading reports, here in S.Africa, that the manufacturers have only the animals best interest at heart. Being such a big company one would think so. But after reading so many articles on contaminated pet food, I am starting to have my doubts. The contaminated ingredients seem to be coming from China. All I can say is that - when I worked as a buyer for a very big food company, the first thing my boss told me, was, 'stay away from China' their products are cheaper but very inferior. This has made me wonder that the dog food manufacturers have gone the cheaper route instead of the safer route. So, therefore, where is all this concern for animal health coming from. There are lot's of other reputable companies in different countries selling the necessary ingredients, only at a higher price.
I for one am seriously thinking of cooking my dogs food myself. At least I know they will be safe.
