Police use tear gas on Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters

Hong Kong police on Sunday fired tear gas at pro-democracy campaigners who massed on major city centre highways in their tens of thousands, an AFP reporter said.

There were chaotic scenes, with protesters shouting as they tried to run away from the clouds of gas, the reporter said.

The use of tear gas is extremely rare in Hong Kong.
