The violence took place in an apartment building in Mississauga, a suburb of Toronto, and included both shooting and stabbing. Peel Regional Police were called onto the scene after gunshots were reported at about 10:40 p.m. E.S.T. There was further shooting when police arrived on scene.
“Shots were fired during some kind of an altercation and I know that as a result of that altercation, the two officers did suffer serious injuries,” Const. George Tudos told CP24 News on scene. “One was shot and another one suffered a stab wound.”
Dozens of officers were on scene and a heavy police presence remained this morning. The apartment complex where the violence took place is on Queen Frederica Drive, near Dundas Street and Dixie Road. Paramedics told media that the two officers suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. The officer who was shot was hit in the torso but due to a bullet-proof vest was not badly hurt.
By morning both officers had been released from hospital.
Police said everyone involved in the shooting was accounted for so it appears that the dead person and/or the wounded person, or both, were perpetrators. It is unclear how the dead civilian, a 30-year-old male, died, or who wounded the other civilian.
There were reports of gunshots before police arrived on scene but one or more officers also fired shots; one witness reported eight or nine shots fired.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), an investigative body more often only called out when an officer has been involved in a shooting, was on scene. Friday night, Const. Tudos said police were “working alongside the SIU to determine exactly what happened here tonight.”
