Bogotá citizens celebrate Christmas very enthusiastically. The festivities include numerous cultural activities such as several concerts of Christmas Carols and musical works of Colombian composers performed by the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra. There are many events of fireworks in various neighborhoods dedicated to all Bogotá citizens, but mostly to children.
The celebrations focus around Bolivar Square (Plaza de Bolívar), the city’s main plaza and civic center. Cultural activities take place around the city’s official 40-meter-high Christmas tree. And finally, there is the “Route of Christmas” with millions of LED lights decorating shopping centers, parks, pathways, building facades and trees in public spaces in 35 sectors of the Colombian capital.
On December 23 in Plaza de Bolivar a great show will take place called the “Drum Dance Dream of China.” The Shanghai Jiangzhou Drum Company will perform a show that will put on the large stage about 100 percussionists, with many costumes and hundreds of drums. The event will be held starting at 6 p.m. and admission is free.
The “Christmas Express” is a traditional train which runs in the evening along some rail routes near the downtown areas of the city with an old locomotive and historic cars lavishly decorated with Christmas lights, singing groups, and lots of music.
