Taylor Dayne talks ‘Live Without,’ memoir, technology and success (Includes interview)

On her new single, Dayne acknowledged that it was a nice collaboration with Avedon. “The song came about in Germany and some writers I worked with in the past and Avedon. We met through our publishers,” she said.

“I love this song. I think it’s great,” she said. “It’s a great banger, it’s good for the clubs and it has you singing. It has an infectious hook that I really love. I am really proud of it,” she added.

Her Tell It to My Heart memoir is available on Amazon. “It has been a 30-year banger,” she said, with a sweet laugh. “It is quite a milestone. The TED Talk inspired me to make it a full book, and tell my whole story including the trials and tribulations,” she said. “There are no straight rodes. It has been a beautiful 30 years.”

Over the course of her music career, Dayne has sold over 75 million albums worldwide and she scored three career Grammy nominations.

For young and aspiring singer-songwriters, she said, “Your platform is right in front of you and you have access to it. It’s all about how you present yourself and don’t give up. There are a lot of rejections, but if you keep working, the more that you are going to get out of it. 100 percent.”

She listed such male artists as Pharrell, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder, and Kendrick Lamar as her dream collaboration choices in the business.

Digital transformation of the music business

Regarding the impact of technology and streaming on the music business, Dayne said, “I’m in it. Technology makes it easier to get in a studio anywhere. Social media turns people into insta-stars, and it takes a lot of work to market, brand and promote yourself. It is all a business. Social media and those platforms have helped tremendously.”

On the downside to all that, Dayne noted that a lot of artists aren’t paid for their work due to technology. “It is very difficult to navigate through that,” she said.

She noted that the Music Modernization Act (MMA) is helping bring in more money for songwriters. “Honestly, it’s a scratch on the surface,” she said.

Dayne shared that she is out there touring, bringing her music to the fans. “It’s not as glamorous as people may think it is, but once I am on stage and in front of an audience, it’s the greatest feeling in the world, and there is nothing like it,” she said.

She defined the word success as “having the freedom, emotionally, financially and mentally.” “To be free of constant nagging. To feel confident and comfortable. There is no doubt in your mind that you are where you want to be,” she said. “Success is a balancing act to make sure you are mentally, physically and emotionally sound. Without your health, you have nothing.”

Live Without” is available on iTunes and on Spotify.
