This smash hit was Iglesias’ moving ballad “Hero,” and Toly did a wonderful rendition, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. He took his time and sang most of the verses in English and some in Spanish. Most importantly, Toly allowed the lyrics to speak for themselves, and his vocals were rich, soulful and captivating.
“It was a great experience, I had a blast watching other amazing performers. It felt great to be part of it,” Toly said, about the Unsung Heroes event, prior to thanking band-mate Devin Peacock (from Larger Than Life) and Matthew Argenti for putting this together.
The Verdict
Overall, Toly Rod is an incredible artist as one-fifth of the boy band tribute act Larger Than Life (along with Edvin, Chris, Devin and Price), where he is able to do it all: sing and dance, and tonight he showed his fans the singer-songwriter side of his artistry. His voice was as smooth as silk, and he was able to form a strong connection with his audience, in a more intimate and emotional level (due to the vulnerability of the song’s lyrics). Well done Toly. Enrique Iglesias himself would have been proud of this brave rendition of “Hero.” His version garnered an A rating.
