Review: Heart’s Ann Wilson releases powerful album of ‘Immortal’ songs (Includes first-hand account)

The CD opens with the rocking “You Don’t Own Me,” which is a collaboration with Warren Haynes. It immediately breaks into Audioslave’s “I Am the Highway,” where she tips her hat to her late friend, Chris Cornell. This latter tune is worth the price of the collection alone.

Her version of Tom Petty’s “Luna” has a bluesy and sultry vibe to it, where she is joined yet again with Warren Haynes. She picks up the pace with a spitfire version of David Bowie’s “I’m Afraid of Americans,” and with “Politician,” she pays homage to the late Jack Bruce of the British rock group Cream.

“Life in the Fast Lane” in an honorable tribute to The Eagles, especially the song’s late co-writer Glenn Frey; moreover, Wilson’s take on “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse is haunting due to her harking vocals.

Wilson’s rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “A Thousand Kisses Deep” is atmospheric yet soulful. It closes with a cover of George Michael’s “A Different Corner,” and on an upbeat note with the sassy “Baker Street.”

Immortal is available on iTunes.

The Verdict

All of the songs on this album were timeless to begin with but Ann Wilson proves that she is one true song stylist. The rock queen is able to twist these tunes and give them her own raw, compelling interpretation as she introduces them to a younger generation of fans. This is a must for any fan of Ann Wilson or any of the original singer-songwriters. One will not be disappointed. Immortal garners an A rating.
