Bedridden Zsa Zsa Gabor turns 98 in Los Angeles

Zsa Zsa Gabor birthday in L.A.

Gabor is bedridden but still lives in an L.A. mansion with husband Frederic Printz von Anhalt, 71. The former star has been beset with health issues in recent years and in a successful bid to save her life, doctors amputated three quarters of her right leg in January of 2011.

It was done at the Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center and Gabor knew the former U.S. president from their days in Hollywood together. Coincidentally, the late-Reagan also had his birthday on Feb. 6: he was born 104 years ago.

What Ms. Gabor did to become famous was act in movies, though not to any great acclaim and not so very often. She was much better at appearing on talks shows anyhow.

One of three sisters, she was born Sari Gabor on February 6 1917, in Budapest, Hungary. All the Gabor sisters married often but Zsa Zsa beat out her sisters in number of marriages but both were in the running: Eva, two years the younger, married five times while the oldest, Magda married six times. Zsa Zsa married nine times.

She and Magda each were married to actor George Sanders — he was Zsa Zsa’s third husband in 1949 and Magda’s fifth in 1970. Of all those marriages, 20 in total, the only child produced by the three sisters was Zsa Zsa’s daughter, Francesca, from her second marriage, to Conrad Hilton.

Gabor and her sisters were part of an era of Hollywood now gone. Eva, who in the 60s starred opposite Eddie Albert in one of TV’s biggest hits of that decade, Green Acres, was the only sister to achieve fame through acting. She and her character from that show, Lisa Douglas, also appeared in Petticoat Junction and The Beverly Hillbillies. Eva had 80 camera credits and acted up until her death in 1995. Magda, who did not act much, died in 1997.

Zsa Zsa appeared in 30 films and some TV shows. She appeared on shows like The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Mike Douglas Show and from 1966 to 1975 she was on Hollywood Squares 65 times. Some of the movies and shows she appeared in were Moulin Rouge, Queen of Outer Space, F Troop and Bonanza.

Francesca Hilton: dies of heart attack

In December Francesca had told Radar online she did not understand why her mother continued to live despite no longer finding joy in life and no longer being able to do much. She said her mother no longer wanted to live. Ms. Hilton died suddenly of a heart attack in January at the age of 67.

Her health is such that last year when her husband had guests over to watch the Academy Awards, he said Zsa Zsa was unable to join them and had to watch from bed in her room alone. He has not told media how his wife spent her 98th birthday.
