Time magazine cover features boy, 3, sucking on mother’s nipple

No, it’s not Photoshopped or creatively designed. The cover of this week’s Time truly shows a boy being breastfed by his mother, exposing some side-boob. Aram Grumet, 3, was asked to stand on a chair and place his mouth over his mother’s breast, a practise familiar to mom Jamie Lynne Grumet.

The Grumets employ attachment parenting in their household, described by Time as “extended breast-feeding, co-sleeping and ‘baby wearing,’ in which infants are physically attached to their parents by slings.”

Photographer Martin Schoeller not only captured the Grumets using this method in action but also four other families. “When you think of breast-feeding, you think of mothers holding their children, which was impossible with some of these older kids,” Schoeller says. “I liked the idea of having the kids standing up to underline the point that this was an uncommon situation.”

Time isn’t shy about explaining the rationale behind the cover shoot. Time magazine editor Rick Stengel said recently, “The whole point of a magazine cover is to get your attention.”

The magazine will be on newsstands this week.

Attachment parenting got a celebrity lift earlier this year when it was revealed actor Alicia Silverstone pre-chews her child’s food and then feeds him via her own mouth. Video below:

What do you think about Time’s choice of cover image? What do you think about “Attachment parenting”?
