N.J. gas station keeps $3.98 gas price despite cheaper gas nearby

The Citgo station located right across the street is the station selling the unleaded gas for $1.79, while the Lukoil station offers super unleaded for $4.59, UPI reports.

The station met with a good deal of scrutiny last year and in 2013 for being the most expensive station at $3.98. Whether the prices have changed at all during the past two years at the station isn’t clear.

The Gasoline Retailers Association told 6ABC Action News that stations can charge whatever they want. Some customers aren’t happy.

“How many people is this guy going to rip off and get away with it?” said Voorhees resident Jeff Pettit.

His teen son recently dropped $65 for 12 gallons of gas at the Lukoil station.

“Stop ripping people off, that’s what I want,” he said. “It’s not right what he’s doing. People are working hard today and if gas over there is $1.79, this guy is $4.69? Come on.”

Pettit took his complaint to the gas station and then contacted Action News.

Tony Caprio was identified as the owner of the franchise, but he told the news station he doesn’t set the prices, and also said questions should be directed “to his boss,” the report said, per Cherry Hill Patch.

A Lukoil spokesman told Action News they have received numerous complaints regarding that particular station’s high prices, and that the company is allegedly in litigation to strip Caprio of his franchise.

“Why pay double? If I have a cold bear after work, I’m not going to go to a bar that has double the price,” said Jim Tierney, also a Voorhees resident.

Action News reports that the station owner called police on the news station and on Pettit as well.

Lukoil told Action News that it hasn’t supplied the station with product for the past several months, but declined further comment due to pending litigation.

Gasoline prices have been on a downward trend in the U.S., and at the end of October, the average price for a gallon of regular was $2.42. Prices had fallen enough so that they dropped below $2 per gallon in South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Jersey, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, and Arkansas, 24/7WallSt. reports.
