Snow and ice warnings were issued for northern and eastern parts of Scotland and England for early Monday morning through late Tuesday.
In its new update, the Met Office said that high pressure will dominate the weather on Friday, developing into more chilly conditions overnight and into the weekend.
Senior meteorologist Marco Petagna told iNews, “We’re not expecting a “Beast from the East,” although colder air will feed down across the UK from the north or from the Arctic this weekend and during next week.
Petagba was referring to the 2018 storm that brought freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and strong winds to the UK along with power cuts and travel disruption.
The introduction of an arctic maritime airmass will bring snow showers to Scotland, Northern Ireland, and along the east coast of England from Monday. Snow is likely to impact northern and eastern areas, while cold temperatures and widespread freezing conditions will affect the whole country.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Almond explains, “the snow showers could spread further south on Tuesday” and that “weather warnings will be issued for Monday and Tuesday once the detail of potential impacts becomes clearer”.
The UK Health Security Agency has issued a Level 2 Cold Weather Alert for the entire country, which is expected to be reviewed and extended in the coming days.
Dr. Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: “During periods like this, it is important to check in on family, friends, and relatives who may be more vulnerable to the cold weather, as it can have a serious impact on health.
“If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over the age of 65, it is important to try and heat your home to at least 18C if you can.”
