Man tries to fire cellphones over prison wall with a crossbow

Cornelius Bazarov, 21, was arrested after attempted to fire the cellphones and accessories over the walls of a prison in Southern Russia, The Stupid News Network reports. An alert guard noticed him traveling through the underbrush shortly before 2:00 a.m. The guard hit the alarm button and the search was on.

The would-be William Tell was found bumbling through the bushes, but it wasn’t until the wee hours that officers discovered ten crossbow bolts, the cellphones, SIM cards and the aforementioned crossbow in a weapons case a mere one hundred meters from the prison fence, Metro reports. The whole thing went down in Tavda, a prison town in the Sverdlovsk Oblast in Russia.

Phones in prison are definitely problematic, prison spokesman Daniel Krylov said.

“Phones are almost as bad as drugs in prisons. When inmates get their hands on them they have access to their criminal networks and can even commit crimes while they’re safely in here with an alibi,” he said. “They use them to order drugs, blackmail staff, threaten other inmates or even organize revenge on people who put them there in the first place.”

Bazarov faces jail time. It’s anyone’s guess as to why he allegedly tried to commit this bizarre crime.
