Drifters accused of two Bay Area murders win delay in proceedings

Morrison Haze Lampley, 23, Lila Scott Alligood, 18, and Sean Michael Angold, 24, are accused of murder and robbery in the deaths of a camper in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and a hiker in Marin County on Oct. 3 and Oct. 5.

Marin County Superior Court Judge Kelly Simmons agreed Monday to postpone arraignment of the three until Thursday and to bar attorneys from speaking with the media until Thursday at the earliest, according to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper.

They have not yet entered pleas to any of the charges.

But authorities say Lampley, Alligood and Angold, who are considered transients with no home addresses, killed 23-year-old Audrey Carey of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, on the second day of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in the park and then, two days later, killed noted yoga teacher Steve Carter, 67, on a hiking trail in Fairfax, Calif.

Carey was found bludgeoned and shot on Oct. 3 after the first night of the three-day music festival; Carter was shot several times on a fire trail in the Loma Alta Open Space Preserve in western Marin County and was still holdling the leash of his Doberman pinscher when his body was found by a passerby.

The dog also was shot but survived.

Lanpley, Alligood and Angold were arrested at a soup kitchen in Portland, Ore., after police tracked their whereabouts using a GPS device in Carter’s station wagon, the newspaper said.

Carey’s passport, plane tickets and camping gear also were found in their possession.

Marin Deputy Public Defender Pedro Oliveros, who is representing Lampley and asked for the gag order to try to limit pretrial publicity, said he would likely ask for more time to prepare to defend the 23-year-old.

“We may be asking for more time,” he said outside the courtroom.

Attorneys said they expect a lawyer to be appointed for Alligood at Thursday’s hearing.
