What to expect from Apple’s WWDC 2018

  • CNET reported that smartphone addiction is likely to be a hot topic this year, with a focus on “digital health” and that the conference will be largely software-free.
  • Wired expects Apple to announce features that allow users to take more “control over their phone usage,” Siri improvements, iOS and MacOS fixes and new watchOS workout features.
  • The Verge keeps their predictions simple and writes that the introduction of iOS 12 and macOS 10.14 is coming.
  • USA TODAY predicts that the issue around battery throttling will be addressed, as well as another push for AR integration and using AI to organize photos.
  • TechCrunch reports that a look at iOS12 is coming today, potentially a new MacBook Air, as well as a focus on “Universal Apps” — apps that allow for a seamless flow between mobile and computer use.
  • Bloomberg says the launch of “ARKit 2.0” is coming, foreshadowing the launch of an AR headset possibly launching in 2020, “minor” software upgrades to the snoozing of notifications and tracking of the stock market, new HomePod software, as well as a push for developers to build watchOS apps.
  • The Information reports that Apple plans to increase the iPhone’s NFC capabilities, opening it up to new uses and applications, ArsTechnica says that this announcement could come during the conference.
  • ArsTechnica predicts a new tvOS, but not a “major overhaul.”
  • DigitalTrends expects nothing major for the MacBook pro, just a “CPU bump.”

Here’s how you can watch the keynote.

The conference is sure to be interesting, for more than the reasons mentioned above. Especially given the latest report on how Facebook has been giving customer data to phone manufacturers, including Apple, in the form of “data sharing partnerships” as reported by the New York Times.
