OTTAWA — The jobless rate was stuck at seven per cent in May for the third month in a row as the economy added a handful of part-time positions, Statistics Canada said Friday.
Full-time work fell in May, a concern to analysts who suggest that part-time work can lead to lower living standards and contribute less to economic growth.
There were 41,000 fewer full-time jobs in May compared with the month before, while 51,000 part-time positions were added to an economy that has been growing at a plodding pace.
The latest job numbers support what previous economic reports have shown about the economic slowdown.
GDP growth ran around 2.5 per cent in the first quarter of this year, which is slower than the 2000 pace but well above recession levels.
