Americans Observe Day of Prayer For Terror Victims

WASHINGTON, 14 Sep 2001, (voa) – Americans are observing a national day of prayer and remembrance for the victims of this week’s terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

President Bush is leading the solemn observances at this hour, attending a memorial service at Washington’s National Cathedral. Many dignitaries including former presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, have joined Mr. Bush and scores of others for the invitation-only service.

The president designated Friday as a day to honor the memories of the thousands of people who lost their lives. Most of the memorial services were scheduled to be held in places of worship at mid-day across the country.

Several other nations, including Canada, Norway and South Korea, declared national days of mourning for the victims of the terrorist attacks. Many victims were foreign nationals living and working in the United States. Americans from all walks of life are displaying their country’s flag, in a show of respect and support for the victims. Professional baseball, football, golf and other sporting contests have been postponed or canceled in the wake of the disasters.

President Bush said earlier that Tuesday’s fiery attacks have seared the hearts of all Americans by what he calls the sudden and senseless taking of so many innocent lives. He urged his fellow citizens to pray for healing and for the strength to serve and encourage one another in hope and faith.
