On Wednesday, the Stockholm teams AIK and Djurgarden duked it out on ice in more ways than one. Their respective fans began to exchange blows midway through the game, hurling smoke bombs at each other before police broke up the fight.
The fight was captured on in a YouTube video. The video shows fans fighting security officials, police and each other. The Globe Arena becomes a moving throng of flags and fists raised against one another.
Many fans were ejected, and by the end of the game – Djurgarden won 3-1 – much of the Globe Arena was empty. Yahoo Sports blog Puck Daddy reports, “…the Swedish Ice Hockey Association is discussing actions that could lead to only home-team fans being allowed at future meetings of the two teams. They play again on Jan. 11.”
AIK and Djurgarden are familiar foes. Puck Worlds found a story about AIK fans attacking Djurgarden fans in September, before a match between the two teams. The start time was delayed by 15 minutes. The end of the game didn’t ease tensions. “Outside the Globe, a brawl broke out between the fans of the clubs, with nine people arrested and ten more taken into custody. In a pub, upwards of forty people were involved in a brawl before it was broken up.”
