NFL: Giants, Vikings playing their Monday night game in Detroit

The game will start at 7:20 p.m. ET at Ford Field in Detroit, the NFL announced.

Earlier, the Vikings-Giants game was pushed to Monday (the game was scheduled for Sunday, noon), due to a powerful blizzard blanketing Minnesota and stranding Giants players in Kansas City. The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission told the NFL the safety of the Metrodome was in question due to heavy snow accumulation on the roof.

It looks like those fears were justified. Sunday morning NFL.com reports the snow “caused a partial collapse of the Metrodome’s inflated roof.” The damage occurred to two of its triangle-shaped Teflon panels, the New York Times found, and the tears in the roof would not be able to be repaired in time for Monday night’s game.

On Twitter, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote at 10:40 a.m. ET: “We were notified this morning by the Metrodome authorities that the dome will not be available for the Giants-Vikings game on Monday or Tuesday. We are currently exploring alternatives to play the game Monday night at the University of Minnesota stadium or another domed NFL stadium. We will continue provide information as it becomes available.”

The Times said this is the third time the Metrodome roof has collapsed. Its last collapse happened in 1983.

On Sunday, Minnesota got whalloped by two feet of snow. The blizzard shut down the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport at about 11:30 a.m on Saturday but a few runways reopened later in the day.
